Maytag Washer
The Maytag appliance company built its reputation on the reliability of its products as depicted in its
advertising campaigns for several decades by the "loneliest repair man." It offers a full line of household
and commercial appliances, from washers to refrigerators to ranges and cook tops. The U.S.-based global company
produces 13 models of clothes washers as well as dryers, refrigerators and kitchen stoves. The Newton, Iowa,
company was purchased by Whirlpool Corp. in 2006, which continues to sell appliances under the Maytag brand.
Maytag produced goods under the names of Amana, Hoover (vacuums), Jenn-Air, Litton and Magic Chef.
Maytag's History
Maytag was started in 1909 when Frederick Maytag bought out his partners in The Parsons Company, with whom he had
been producing farm equipment, such as threshing machines, band-cutters, and self-feeder attachments. That same
year Maytag introduced its first fuel-powered washing machine: The Hired Girl Washer. This prototype for later
models didn't have its own motor but was powered by any available engine (including a tractor engine). Maytag
now manufactures 13 styles of washers--six front-load and seven top-loading models--as well as two washer-dryer
combos.
Special Features of Maytag Washing Machines
Maytag washers' special features include Smart Dispensers, the IntelliFill Automatic
Water Level Sensor, the Clean Washer Cycle and the Washer Impeller System.
The Smart Dispensers system is
composed of a four-section dispenser compartment, which allows for the automatic release of detergent, fabric
softener, bleach and auto oxi prewash or auto soak.
The IntelliFill Automatic Water Level Sensor determines the
load size and composition and automatically adjusts the water level.
The Clean Washer Cycle cleans the
washing machine automatically. A light on the machine's control panel reminds the user to run the cleaning
cycle at about every 45 regular washes. The system cleans the interior of the washtub using high-temperature
water and bleach (or a washer cleaning detergent available from Maytag).
The Washer Impeller System
propels clothing from the outside of the tub toward the middle to provide better exposure to soap and water.
Consumers may chose from a variety of colors including black, black with chrome, crimson, evergreen,
slate blue and white.
Maintenance of Maytag Washing Machines
Regular wash-tub cleaning using the Clean Washer Cycle feature is recommended. Additional maintenance includes
periodic inspection of water hoses and replacement every five years. The door seal should also be cleaned
occasionally to ensure no foreign objects are lodged there.
Energy Efficiency and Maytag Washing Machines
Close to 70 percent of Maytag washing machines are energy efficient, using 25 percent less energy. All the
front-load machines as well as the Bravos line of top-loading machines are energy efficient. Only the lower
priced Centennial line of top-loaders is not ENERGY STAR certified.
Warranty
The Maytag limited warranty is for one year from the date of purchase, when the appliance is operated and
maintained according to instructions furnished with the product. The company will pay for factory specified parts
and repair labor to correct defects in materials or workmanship. Service must be provided by a Maytag-designated
service company. This limited warranty is valid only in the United States or Canada and applies only when the
major appliance is used in the country in which it was purchased.
